In another major move by business magnate Ratan Tata, Tata Electronics has announced that it will hire over 20,000 more employees at the company’s new iPhone assembly plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. According to a media report, the announcement was made by N Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, in Ranipet where he was attending the groundbreaking ceremony of Tata Motors’ Rs 9,000 crore manufacturing unit on Saturday.

“In the last three years, we have set up a modern electronics factory in Hosur, Krishnagiri. Currently, 20,000 people are employed  at the facility, out of which over 15,000 are women. In another year, 40,000 people will be employed there, doubling the workforce in that facility,” Chandrasekaran was quoted as saying by Business Standard.

Chandrasekaran inaugurated a “state-of-the-art” manufacturing unit by Tata Motors and JLR in Panapakkam which he said is aimed at making high-end vehicles.

“This is not just another factory. This is a modern, state-of-the-art factory that will produce very high-end vehicles. For the first time, this new modern platform will be developed by Tata Motors and JLR together,” the Tata Sons Chairman said, adding that the factory will create 5,000 direct jobs once fully operational, and ” will foster an entire ecosystem in this region, generating many more jobs,” he was quoted as saying.

Notably, Tata Group, which has a workforce of 1,50,000 employees in Tamil Nadu, has invested in three major manufacturing units in the state—Tata Power, Tata Electronics, and Tata Motors. The conglomerate has also invested Rs 2,200 crore in the industrial training institutes of Tamil Nadu to provide skill training to the youth.

Chandrasekaran noted that lakhs of people in the Tamil Nadu depend on Tata’s ecosystem, besides the 1,50,000 direct employees, which it has employed across its various ventures including TCS, Titan, Tata Chemicals, Tata Power, IHCL, and its retail businesses in southern state.
