Blackwater Photography with Anthony Berberian

The Underwater Club (TUC), the underwater photography school created by pro shooter and Nauticam/Mares Ambassador Nicolas Remy, will be talking about the art of blackwater photography during its August webinar. Nicolas will be joined by Anthony Berberian, a blackwater photo pioneer based in French polynesia, for the event on August 11th (U.S. times).

Along with fellow underwater shooter Fabien Michenet, Anthony has been exploring the deep waters off Tahiti since 2011—long before blackwater diving was “a thing.” He has collaborated with scientists in the discovery of many new species not previously known to science, contributing to various books on marine biodiversity—and even having and two new species named after him. His blackwater work has been awarded in several competitions, including “Best of Show” in the 2015 Our World Underwater International Underwater Photography and Video Competition, hosted by DPG, and winner of the underwater category in the 2017 Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

In the two-hour session, you can expect a deep dive—pun intended—into the world of blackwater, with Anthony showing the wide range of critters he has encountered over 13 years of blackwater diving, discussing the photographic equipment you need, and of course, the techniques required to achieve epic blackwater images. As usual, participants can ask Anthony questions directly during the Q&A portion of the session.

TUC members join for free, while non-members will need to purchase tickets to the event at AU$49 (approx. US$35)—which is also the price of monthly membership, so this is an ideal opportunity to join the club and take advantage of all of the membership benefits.

Here are the event times:

  • August 11th, 6pm Los Angeles time (PDT)
  • August 11th, 8pm Dallas time (CDT)
  • August 11th, 9pm Miami time (EDT)
  • August 12th, 9am Singapore time (SGT)
  • August 12th, 11am Sydney time (AEST)
  • August 12th, 1pm Auckland time (NZST)
