Blue Jays’ Romano dealing with cracked fingernail, pitched through it vs. Rays

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano is dealing with a cracked fingernail he sustained in Friday’s win over the Tampa Bay Rays, manager John Schneider told reporters Saturday.

Romano pitched through the injury in Saturday’s 7-6 loss to the Rays. He came in for the bottom of the ninth inning with the Blue Jays leading 6-5 but gave up four hits including a walk-off single to Josh Lowe.

Schneider said they were aware of the injury heading into Saturday’s game.

After Romano struggled to start the ninth, Schneider and members of the Blue Jays’ training staff made a visit to the mound. But the closer waved them off and told his manager, “I’m good to make pitches, see you later.”

Romano also didn’t blame the fingernail for the loss.

“Sometimes you go out there, you throw pitches, and sometimes they find holes,” Romano said.

Romano picked up his 36th save of the season in Friday’s win, good for second most in the American League.
