25 year ‘Official Car of MotoGP’ heritage:
2023 marks 25 years of close partnership between BMW M and MotoGP rights holder, Dorna Sports. The BMW M2 that TOI Auto spotted was the 25 year anniversary safety car, that debuted at the 2023 Portuguese Grand Prix in March this year, which was also this car’s 25th season as the Official Car of MotoGP, a title BMW M has proudly held since 1999.
The BMW M2 MotoGP specs:
The safety car is of course based on the all-new BMW M2 and the special livery featuring the traditional M white, blue and red, make it look distinct. It also gets a big wing at the rear and a bar of lights on the roof, which it uses to signal to racers behind when it is safe to pass and other instructions. The ’Safety Car’ livery is also seen around the car at multiple points.
In terms of equipment, the BMW M2 MotoGP gets a Twin-turbo, in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 460 hp and 550 Nm of torque. It also gets a bunch of ‘safety car’ exclusive upgrades such as the roll-bar, RECARO seats, 6-point racing harness, a fire extinguisher, safety car roof bar and matching front lights. There are a number of M Performance parts on the car as well, these include a custom exhaust system with quad tips out the back. It also gets carbon wing mirrors, a rear diffusor and a wing.
