Rory McIlroy provided a major boost to his Ryder Cup preparations by birdieing the final hole of his second round at the BMW PGA Championship to avoid the cut at Wentworth.
Needing a birdie at the par-five 18th to extend his tournament, McIlroy produced a brilliant drive and approach iron before two-putting to move to -1 for the round and overall.
The Northern Irishman was once more outshone by playing partner – and European Ryder Cup team-mate – Ludwig Åberg, as the 23-year-old also birdied the final hole to move into a share of the lead with fellow Swede Sebastian Soderberg on -10.
McIlroy’s round, and several others’, finished in almost total darkness as a delay caused by fog earlier on Friday and slow play led to a chaotic and surreal finale.
First-round leader Marcus Helligkilde was one of several players who will need to return to Wentworth to finish their second rounds on Saturday morning, with the Dane still in contention having been -8 after 14 holes.
