Brandon Maxwell took a “trip through memory lane” to build out his pre-fall collection filled with great American sportswear styles for the everyday. As with spring — a collection that received mixed reviews, but which Maxwell said was a collection that freed him from the idea of being one certain thing — his latest lineup continued to push toward more relaxed, everyday wear with a rejection of overly constricting designs.
“We’re going into 10 years in September and I’m so proud of having this outlet, I’m so grateful. It’s the thing that has sustained, fulfilled and helped me, and I really feel that what I wanted to put into this collection, I wanted more people to wear it and have it,” he said during a preview. “I want people to get dressed up and feel good, but I also want people to have a sweater to wear to work.”
Through that lens, there were plenty of great cashmere knits to choose from, such as lofty polo turtlenecks and high-collared wrapped jackets, all with 18-karat gold and rhodium-plated silver rounded “macaroon“-shaped buttons. They played into his overall desire to give customers a full collection of Brandon Maxwell silhouettes that have performed well for the brand, in new iterations and natural fabrications while upholding a strong sense of ease.
For instance, spring’s mannish barn jackets were cropped and came in a shimmery metal woven silk organza, classic blue denim or leather. Knit shrugs could be styled for day over a sleek bodysuit with masculine tailored trousers or signature denim, and metal hardware elevated ribbed jersey dresses and loose T-shirts.
Even his signature strict high necks were softened into a cowl on minimalist-bent styles, as seen on a slinky black knit halter gown; a cotton sleeveless blouse; a knit version of his bestselling leather biker jacket, and a new spongey, refined shantung dress made up of individual hand-folded and washed panels.
“I think that I’m interested in approaching the next 10 years of this brand, should I be lucky enough to have it, with a reality,” Maxwell said. His lineup of dressy and casual elements had ample doses of it, providing easy options for his woman to get dressed every day, without the fuss.
