Initial reports suggested that the 28-year-old would return to the field next year, but Raiders coach Ricky Stuart revealed it will be unlikely.

“It is really sad for the kid… it’s a tragedy actually,” Stuart told WWOS.

“The medical reports we are getting is that he is very unlikely to play again.

“At 28, that’s tough and he has been good for us.

“But we are supporting him and looking for a pathway for him after football. We would like to keep him in the game and in the club.”

The scary incident happened in Round 13 when Harawira-Naera appeared to become disoriented and fell to the turf shortly after taking a hit-up.

The match stopped for over 10 minutes as medical staff rushed onto the field and attended to the New Zealand international, who had begun convulsing.

Harawira-Naera was conscious and responsive by the time he was transported from the field in a medicab amid a standing ovation from the crowd.

The New Zealand international was discharged around 3:30am the following morning.

Doctors initially concluded a series of head knocks contributed to the seizure.

Harawira-Naera has scored nine tries in 55 games for the club and became a fan favourite for leading the Viking Clap with fans after wins.
