Cars: Qualcomm CEO on how AI will ‘drive’ cars of the future

Artificial Intelligence is now in almost every sphere of technology. Qualcomm, a company that makes processors that power a vast majority of Android phones, has been putting AI in smartphones. Now, the company wants to do the same in cars. Cristiano Amon, CEO, Qualcomm, believes that a car is becoming a computing platform. “The foundation for these next-generation capabilities is the software-defined vehicle, powered by scalable and upgradeable cloud-connected hardware and software platforms optimised to support vehicle management and services,” said Amon in a blog post. Qualcomm, according to Amon, has already partnered with German and European based car manufacturers to bring more technology in cars.
AI in cars: The next big thing
Amon believes that a car vehicle can get to know its passengers and be engaged using gestures and voice commands. “When equipped with generative AI, a conversational digital assistant can use information from in and around the vehicle to deliver contextually relevant experiences to each occupant and make the modern cockpit easier to navigate and more personalised,” he added.
He further said that productivity and entertainment will merge in new ways for drivers and passengers alike, whether on the road or while waiting for the vehicle to charge. AI could predict — using information from calendars — where a driver is header and then proactively suggest the optimal route based on current traffic conditions and reports from other vehicles. On the daily commute home, it might remind the driver to make their regular call home. Amon says that dhe driver can then ask the assistant to order their family’s favourite dinner to be delivered when they arrive at home. All this can be done, according to Amon, using the power of artificial intelligence. “This is a pivotal time for the automotive ecosystem to continue collaborating with technology partners who can help automakers achieve their vision,” he added.
