The Central government will start retailing onion at a subsidised rate of Rs 35 per kg in the Delhi-NCR region from Thursday. According to an official release, the retails sales of onion at Rs 35/Kg will be carried out through mobile vans and NCCF retail shops across various locations in Delhi-NCR.

Where to buy?

As per the released, the retail sale of subsidized onions through mobile vans will take place at 38 locations including Krishi Bhawan, NCUI complex, Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, Patel Chowk Metro Station, and parts of Noida.

The key kitchen, whose prices have shot up to Rs 60/kg in the national capital, will also be sold at NCCF retail shops, it said, adding the Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi will launch the retail sale of onion from Krishi Bhawan on Thursday.

Buffer stock meant to protect customers

The move of selling onions at subsidized rates is aimed at mitigating the rising prices of the bulb which is currently being sold at Rs 60 per kg in Delhi-NCR, the NCCF said, as per the statement.

“The market intervention is aimed at improving local supplies and curb rising prices of the key kitchen staple, which is ruling over Rs 60 per kg in the national capital.”

The NCCF said it has maintained a buffer stock of onion procured directly from farmers of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and the same will be offloaded for retail sale at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg in order to protect consumers from exorbitant prices and prevent windfall gains for intermediaries.

By directly engaging with farmers and offering onions at a discounted rate, NCCF said it is playing a crucial role in mitigating the impact of price fluctuations on consumers, the statement added.
