SAN JOSE — Chick-fil-A has bought a parcel near a choice San Jose intersection in a real estate deal that could mark an expansion for the restaurant chain, public records show.
The fast-food restaurant company paid $4.5 million for a parcel near the corner of Silver Creek Road and East Capital Expressway, according to documents filed on Oct. 6 with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office.
Chick-fil-A bought the parcel through an all-cash deal, the county real estate files show.
At present, the just-bought parcel is a surface parking lot with frontage on Silver Creek Road.
Target sold the parcel to Chick-fil-A, according to the property documents. Target operates one of its big-box stores in the same retail complex.
In the wake of the property transaction, Target retained the ownership of its store site and an adjacent surface parking lot, the grant deed and other documents on file with the cunty show.
Sometime around 2010, Chick-fil-A became a lightning rod for controversy after it was disclosed that the restaurant company had used the Winshape Foundation to donate to groups that oppose same-sex marriage. Winshape was established by S. Truett Cathy, the late founder of Chick-fil-A.
Georgia-based Chick-fil-A has encountered varying levels of opposition to its proposals to launch new restaurant sites in an array of locations around the United States.
At one point more than a decade ago, the Boston mayor and a Chicago alderman vowed to prevent Chick-fil-A’s franchise expansions in their respective cities.
Despite these stances, Chick-fil-A opened a Chicago restaurant in 2011 and a Boston restaurant in 2022.
In 2019, the San Jose City Council voted to hang rainbow and transgender flags in the vicinity of a Chick-fil-A restaurant located in the airport’s Terminal B section as a way to demonstrate support for LGBTQ rights.
Other Chick-fil-A restaurants have opened in other San Jose and Bay Area locations under more tranquil circumstances.
This news organization sent an email to Chick-fil-A requesting a comment or context regarding the potential for a new restaurant at the just-bought location along Silver Creek Road in San Jose.
The property that Chick-fil-A bought is roughly three-fourths of an acre in size. It’s located next to a Chevron gasoline station and a car wash that operates right on the corner of Silver Creek and East Capitol.
The San Jose shopping center where Chick-fil-A now owns a site also hosts other restaurants, including The Boiling Crab and Pho Papa. Red Lobster operates a restaurant about a block away.
This means a possible Chick-fil-A would be proximate to several other existing dining operations in that part of San Jose.
