Drawing parallels with the United States, China is advancing its plans for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. According to the South China Morning Post, China has developed a prototype of a nuclear reactor for a large surface warship which will be operational for long periods without refuelling. 

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will provide long range, capable of carrying more fuel and weapons for their aircrafts. 

The Associated Press had published a report regarding nuclear-powered aircraft carrier on November 11. The prototype reactor for a large surface warship was built at a mountain site near Leshan in Sichuan province. 

A research was conducted by California’s Middlebury Institute of International Studies and it shared the information with the news agency. The research suggested that China’s 701 Institutes had gathered reactor equipment with an aim to install it on large surface warships. China’s 701 Institute supervises aircraft carrier development. 

Currently, the US has 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and France has one. China wanted to develop a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier for a long-time back. China’s plan has mounted pressure on India despite the two nations trying to establish trust after the border issue. India does not have a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. In May , Union defence minister Rajnath Singh had announced that India will build  a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier soon.
