China’s answer to ChatGPT is here: Lakhs of downloads, millions of questions asked on day 1

It has turned out to be an arms race kind of situation. We are talking about generative AI. OpenAI started it, Google followed it and now China is getting really serious about it. Baidu, which is one of China’s biggest tech companies, had announced ErnieBot, earlier this year. Now, it has been rolled out to the public. According to a report by South Morning China Post, the first day was a big success for Ernie Bot.

Most popular on Apple App Store

According to the report on the App Store in China, Ernie Bot was the most downloaded app. The app saw more than 3.1 lakh downloads within a day of being rolled out. The numbers were even more impressive on Android. On the first day, 2.4 million downloads of the app were recorded on Android smartphones.

Still early days for Ernie Bot

Like with all other generative AI, Ernie Bot did have certain teething troubles. As per the report, people in China asked Ernie close to 33.4 million questions in the first 24 hours. The numbers were revealed by Baidu in a Weibo post.
There were some queries with which the chatbot did struggle, according to the report. For example, These early adopters peppered Ernie with more than 33.42 million questions in the first 24 hours after its public debut, according to a post published on the company’s Weibo account. However, the AI bot was not at the chatbot was asked which of the founders at Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent were “capitalists”. China considers itself it to be a socialist country, so being termed capitalist isn’t a good thing. Ernie answered that the founders of Alibaba and Tencent were actually capitalists. The reason given was that the founders of the two tech companies raised foreign capital and had listed their companies outside mainland China, according to the report.
