Rebels have seized control of a southern Syrian city – Daraa and are advancing towards Homs.
Rebels have intensified their move and have seized control of a southern Syrian city – Daraa, which is the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Notably, Daraa has become the fourth major city to slip out of the control of Assad’s army. The Syrian Army agreed to withdraw from Daraa under a deal with the rebels, who ensured a safe passage for army officials to Damascus, Aajtak.in reported, citing reports.
Several videos have flooded the internet, featuring rebels interacting with locals, celebrating by firing shots into the air at the city’s main square.
No Response from Assad’s Government
Despite losing Daraa, the Assad government has issued no official statement. The city is home to approx. 100,000 people and holds symbolic significance as the starting point of the anti-Assad movement 13 years ago.
Rebels Advance Towards Homs
Rebel forces are advancing towards Homs, a city located between Damascus and the Mediterranean Sea. If captured, it disrupts supply routes to Russian military bases. The Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has called on pro-Assad forces in Homs to join their cause.
Entry Of Hezbollah
To counter the advances of the rebel forces, Iran-backed Hezbollah has reportedly sent fighters to deal with rebels. Meanwhile, Syrian and Russian forces launched airstrikes on rebel strongholds, killing several, state media reported.
The Syrian Civil War
Between 2011 to 2021, Syria’s civil war has claimed over 305,000 deaths, according to the United Nations. Assad’s team, with help from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, has managed to make substantial territorial gains. However, the emergence of recent obstacles has exposed a few cracks in their armour. Seizing this opportunity, Sunni rebels are regaining their footing and demonstrating improved resilience.
