Cody Simpson has fallen short of his Olympic dream, failing to qualify for the Paris Games at the swim trials in Brisbane.
Needing to finish top two in the 100m butterfly to book his ticket, Simpson came fifth in a time of 51.79 seconds.
Matt Temple won in a time of 51.15 to just seal his spot under the qualification time of 51.17.

Ben Armbruster finished second in 51.23, but has already booked his spot in the team so can serve as back-up for Temple in the relay teams.
But for Simpson, it brings an end to his dream of making the Paris Olympics.
“Cody Simpson will be disappointed with that result, but he should be very proud of the journey he has been prepared to embark on,” Australian legend Ian Thorpe said.
Simpson was proud of his efforts, despite coming up short in the final.
“I am proud of myself and I knew it was going to be a tight one tonight. Knew I was going to have to pull something out of myself, but I was very close to my best swim,” he said after the race.
“All you can do is all you can do. Which is a saying I quite like because what else can you do?
“But it’s been an amazing four-year journey. Having the privilege of swimming for Australia and winning medals internationally with the men’s relay and, you know, world cups.
“It has been absolutely unbelievable. I gave everything I had this week and sometimes that’s all you can do.”
Simpson went on to say he was satisfied with his journey.
“I can remember in 2022 everyone was like ‘what are you doing? This is absolutely impossible.’ I said ‘well, I just want to see what I can get out of myself’,” he continued.
“I think I have been able to satisfy a part of myself that was certainly a fire burning very much inside me. I’ve been able to fulfil those curiosities and desires I had. I have learned so much and grown so much from it.
“And how I can take that back into music and entertainment and see what I can do – there’s some exciting projects lined up for after this that I was going to go back and do regardless of how this week went.”
He had earmarked qualifying for Paris 2024 as his goal when he first returned to the pool after giving it up as a junior.
Simpson grew up hoping to follow in his parents’ footsteps — mum Angie represented Australia at the 1987 Pan Pacific Games, while dad Brad did so at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.
Music took hold when he was 13, and a decade on he changed gears before it was too late.
He made the 2022 Commonwealth Games team and went home with a gold medal as a member of the victorious 4x100m freestyle relay team.
Simpson also won the heart of Olympic legend Emma McKeon with the couple going from strength to strength throughout the past three years.
