A couple in Northern Kentucky decided to tie the knot inside the men’s bathroom at a gas station this week. While the small town of Verona might not be the same setting used by William Shakespeare, romance still exists south of Cincinnati. Now, this wasn’t just any dingy service station toilet and sink. They recited their vows underneath a disco ball.
The bride Tiana Abney conceived the idea for the unusual ceremony. She works at Verona’s HOP Shop, a regional chain of gas stations in Northern Kentucky between Louisville and Cincinnati. The chain is known for its disco bathrooms. Every location features a ceiling-mounted disco ball and lights in the bathroom that goes off when customers hit a red button. Abney told WXIX, “I wanted something a little different. Didn’t want to just get married in a typical chapel, or you know, go to the church. I wanted something fun to tell my kids. Something fun. A good experience.”
Her new husband Logan Abney was receptive to her wedding plans, explaining to the TV station, “She was like, ‘The HOP Shop at the HOP Shop,’ and I was like, ‘That doesn’t seem too bad,’ and she’s like, ‘The bathroom,’ and I’m like, ‘That’s kind of cool too.’” It’s hard not to agree that it was cool after watching the video posted on the chain’s YouTube channel. The newlyweds hit the button and shared their first kiss under the disco light.
While the location might not be everyone’s cup of tea, the ceremony captured what weddings should be about: celebrating the special occasion with your loved ones. I’m just glad that the auto-flush didn’t accidentally trigger on a toilet during the whole thing.
