Baisakhi, popularly known as Vaisakhi is a popular harvest festival predominantly celebrated in the northern Indian state of Punjab. Every year, the festival falls on the 13th or the 14th of April as it marks the beginning of the solar year and also the harvest season. The day also commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobin Singh in 1699. On this day, people come together to sing kirtans, arrange processions and visit gurudwaras to offer prayers. Though the festival is mainly celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus, other communities in the country also commemorate the day with gusto, cheer and happiness.

This year, Baisakhi 2024 will be celebrated on April 13 (Saturday) commencing at 9.15 pm just before the Mesha Sankranti, as per the Drik Panchang.

Baisakhi is considered both a religious as well as a harvest festival. The day marks the beginning of the spring season and farmers in the northern part of the country harvest the season’s crops and gear up for the next season’s sowing. For Sikhs, the day holds immense religious significance as it celebrates the establishment of the Khalsa Pant by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. It also marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year and is celebrated with new hopes, aspirations and resolutions.
Colour cultural performances, including Bhangra and Giddha dances, are organised to celebrate the joyous occasion. Moreover, devotees also visit Gurudwaras to offer prayers and participate in special prayer services. Vibrant fairs and markets are organised, offering an array of traditional handicrafts, clothes and Punjabi cuisine.
