Billionaire Adar Poonawalla-led Serum Institute is all set for a major deal. The company, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by doses produced and sold, has reportedly started talks with global private equity firm TPG to sell a 40 percent stake in SCHOTT Poonawalla.

Serum Institute’s Plan?

As per news outlet Moneycontrol and insider sources, Serum Institute and TPG appear to be close to reaching an agreement. The Serum Institute is considering selling a major portion (about 40 percent) of its stake in its joint venture to TPG.

Interestingly, other insiders also affirm this, adding that the Serum Institute plans to hold onto a small portion (10 percent) of their joint venture. This move values SCHOTT Poonawalla at a staggering USD 600+ million. Yet, official word from neither TPG nor Serum Institute has broken the silence about the ongoing procedures. The key point to remember is TPG Capital’s extensive influence within pharmaceuticals and healthcare sectors in India, including notable stakes in organisations such as Manipal Hospitals, Sai Life Sciences, Dr Agarwal Healthcare and Nova IVF.
