New Delhi: The New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is all set to open two new liquor shops for domestic passengers, one shops inside Terminal 3 of the airport and the other one inside Terminal 1, according to a report by Times of India.
The report indicates that the first shop is expected to be operational in the first week of July, whereas the second might take several more weeks to open. Due to the lower taxes on alcoholic beverages imposed by the Delhi administration, their prices are relatively lower in the city.
For the record, state duties on alcohol stand at 62% in Delhi, while they are significantly higher in states such as Karnataka at 83% and Maharashtra at 71%. This information is based on data from the International Spirits and Wine Association of India, as reported by The Economic Times in September 2023.
Similarly, states such as Goa with a 49% tax and Haryana with a 47% tax offer liquor at prices significantly lower than in Delhi. This allows many frequent travelers to and from Delhi and Goa to save money by bringing their preferred alcoholic beverages with them. Domestic passengers are permitted to transport up to five litres of alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content below 70% across state borders.
For beverages containing 24% alcohol or less by volume, the 5-litre limit is not applicable.
