Dell Reveals Big 40-inch Ultrawide 5K Monitor for Content Creators

Ahead of CES 2024, which kicks off in Las Vegas next week, Dell announced the UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U4025QW), the world’s first 40-inch 5K monitor certified for five-star eye comfort, per Dell analysis.

“Whether you’re a content creator, data scientist or engineer, or you just need a monitor to keep you in your flow — a device with the best value in precision and efficiency is critical to keeping you productive in any work environment,” Dell explains in a blog post.

The sizeable curved panel is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified and incorporates IPS Black Panel technology to improve color contrast. The display has a 5,120 x 2,160 resolution, promising significant detail.

It is worth noting that this is not a full 5K resolution, which is 5,120 x 2,880, but instead 5K horizontal and 2K vertical. 5,120 x 2,160 is a 4K UHD resolution extended in width by 33%, while 5,120 x 2,880, the most common “5K” resolution, is double the resolution of QHD in both dimensions. Nonetheless, the new Dell display should deliver plenty of pixels.

Per a Dell fact sheet, the monitor promises to display 99% of the DCI-P3 / Display P3 color space and boasts a 2,000:1 contrast ratio. The panel has a built-in ambient light sensor to optimize brightness and color temperature based on a user’s surroundings, and an improved ComfortView Plus panel reduces blue light emissions to less than 35%.

Concerning eye comfort, Dell is partners with TUV Rheinland, and “Dell’s UltraSharp monitors are the first to have TUV Rheinland® five-star eye comfort certification, a new industry standard for eye comfort to help reduce signs of eye fatigue,” Dell explains.

The company outlines three steps it took to achieve this certification, including bumping the refresh rate from 60 to 120Hz and implementing the ambient light sensor and blue light reduction technology mentioned above. Blue light exposure has decreased from 50% to 35%, which studies have shown can reduce eye fatigue.

The monitor also includes a wide variety of ports and connections. The display includes an RJ45 2.5 GbE port, USB-A and USB-C pop-out quick access ports, Thunderbolt 4 with up to 140W power delivery, DisplayPort 1.4, and HDMI 2.1. The USB-C ports also support 10Gbps transfer speeds and can deliver up to 15W of power.

Alongside the 40-inch model, Dell also revealed a 34-inch curved Thunderbolt Hub monitor (U3425WE). The smaller monitor offers the same features, albeit with a smaller 34-inch LCD with a lower 3440 x 1440 resolution.

Both displays are slated to arrive at retailers in late February. The larger 40-inch panel costs $2,400, and the 34-inch display is $1,400.
