Dentist shares seven ‘crucial’ early warning signs of mouth cancer

As the age of mouth cancer patients continues to drop with no clear cause, one dentist has highlighted worrying symptoms that many people overlook.

With an increasing number of young individuals being diagnosed with mouth cancer, and many unsure why they are even at risk, Dr Ferakh Hamid from Aesthetique Dental Care has warned about several signs that people may be ignoring.

He pointed out seven different symptoms that could serve as early warning signs.

Thickness in the throat

The expert described this sensation as “a persistent feeling of something in their throat”, which can include a change in swallowing or constant throat discomfort. He noted that many people don’t immediately link this with potential long-term health problems.

He cautioned: “This can be an early warning sign of mouth cancer. It’s crucial to listen to your body.”

Changes in voice or hoarseness

This common symptom of colds and flu could indicate something much more serious if patients notice ongoing changes, especially if they have difficulty speaking loudly or clearly. The expert encouraged those experiencing this to seek a professional evaluation.

Swollen lymph nodes

Swollen lymph nodes in the neck may herald a slew of illnesses, with a medical professional cautioning: “If you notice swelling or a lump in your neck that persists or grows, it’s essential to seek medical attention promptly. Early detection can significantly impact the success of treatment.”

Difficulties

Issues with chewing, swallowing or speaking can often lead people to seek medical advice as such problems interfere with daily life. Dr Hamid specifically advised those experiencing ongoing or escalating difficulties to get checked by a healthcare specialist.

Ear and head pain

Persistent ear pain and headaches should draw attention, particularly when linked with mouth cancer symptoms. The health expert noted: “While ear pain and headaches can be attributed to various causes, their persistent or unusual occurrence warrants attention, especially when accompanied by other symptoms of mouth cancer. It’s important to connect these dots and discuss them with your dentist or doctor.”

Numb sensations

Unusual numbness or sensations in the mouth area, including the lips and tongue, might come along with changes in colour, signalling a grave warning sign of mouth cancer. Dr Hamid highlighted: “These are not normal changes, and they should not be ignored. A healthcare provider can help determine the cause and necessary next steps.”

Loose teeth

Teeth loosening without apparent dental issues could also be a symptom of concern, separate from the common dental ailments.

Dr Hamid cautioned: “If you’re experiencing this alongside other symptoms, it could be a sign of something more serious, such as oral cancer. It’s crucial to report these changes to your dentist or a healthcare professional as soon as possible.”
