The first thing one notices about Derek Lam 10 Crosby’s latest look book is the movement. Creative director Kate Wallace chose to use Glorietta Reantaso, a movement artist, to breathe life into Wallace’s pre-fall offering and kick off a new editorial series, “10X10.” The series will feature “women of substance,” she said. “This is the woman who we design for: She’s a doer, she’s out there, she’s creative, she’s doing all the things, and we’re at the center of it because we make the clothes that she uses in her life.”
Only a few seasons in Wallace is steadfast about making a thoughtful urban wardrobe that feels modern, livable and approachable. Case in point: new linen denim, airy and light, a pant to take you through all the warm months and beyond. Suiting has blazers without linings, some without lapels; polished yet sweet dresses, and riffs on 1930’s pajama dressing with silky separates. Pants — a house staple — here are wide leg with vintage looking buttons up the side — open them up and transform the silhouette in the August heat or style it with one of Wallace’s summer cashmere knits.
Using dance as a way to spark a conversation between body and clothing is a smart step in the right direction for the evolution of the brand. Two seasons in it’s clear Wallace has her eye on ways to elevate the wardrobe of a modern woman with updates that stand the test of time.
