Diddy's lawyer: 'Improper pretrial publicity' preventing fair trial

(NewsNation) — Sean “Diddy” Combs’ defense team filed a reply regarding the “deluge of improper pretrial publicity” they claim is “undermining” the music mogul’s right to a fair trial.

In court documents obtained by NewsNation, Diddy’s team in a letter to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian requested that the court “immediately restrain extrajudicial statements” after interviews from a grand jury witness and their lawyer due to “imminent harm.”

“Over the past several days, a grand jury witness and his attorney have given multiple interviews – including outside the courthouse immediately following his apparent grand jury testimony – making false and outrageous claims,” the filing reads.

A NewsNation article was among a list of articles cited by Diddy’s lawyer, however the witness or their attorney is not being named here due to the court filing’s anonymous nature. NewsNation has reached out to Diddy’s legal team for comment outside of business hours and the article will be updated with their response.

“These stories have spread rapidly through the media and created the impression that such videos exist, which is false, and that the government is actually crediting his sensational claims, which is profoundly prejudicial,” the filing adds.

NewsNation has reached out to Diddy’s team for comment and has not yet heard back.

Diddy has been at the center of a storm of controversy and legal troubles where multiple individuals have come forward with allegations of sexual assault against him, leading to a series of lawsuits.

These accusations have triggered a federal investigation, with sex trafficking charges against the music mogul. A May 5 trial date has been set.

This article mentions sexual assault. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-4673.
