DJI Announces 75mm f/1.8 Lens For Drone Cinematography

DJI unveiled a new lens for its Inspire 3 cinema drone, the DL 75mm f/1.8. It has the longest focal length and widest aperture of any lens in the DJI DL mount lineup.

“With the new DJI DL 75mm lens, we continue to bring innovation to the filmmaking industry by pushing aerial and handheld cinematography to new heights,” says DJI Creative Director Ferdinand Wolf in a press release.

Despite its medium-telephoto focal length, the lens is relatively small, weighing only 269 grams (9.5 ounces), and features a carbon fiber construction. DJI says it is designed to meet the mobility requirements of the Inspire 3 drone, and the size of the lens allows it to balance with the drone’s gimbal counterweight system.

The 75mm f/1.8 lens is a solid addition to DJI’s line of drone lenses, which includes an 18mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/2.8, and a 17-28mm T3.0 servo zoom. DJI touts the lens’ versatility, being able to capture detailed landscapes as well as close-up shots of action from a safe distance. 75mm lenses create an interesting perspective that could complement the typical wide-angle vista shots one might typically expect from drone cinematography

A black camera lens with a textured grip and a red dot marker near the mount is positioned on a white background. The lens has a greenish tint on the glass and markings indicating a focal length of 75mm.
The DJI DL 75mm f/1.8’s compact, carbon fiber construction was designed specifically for aerial shooting using DJI’s high-end drones and gimbals.

Because the lens is DL mount, it is also compatible with DJI’s Ronin 4D camera with integrated gimbal. PetaPixel recently reviewed the new 8K version, and the previous 6K camera was used heavily in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The DL 75mm f/1.8 would feel right at home in a Ronin cinematographer’s bag.

DJI has had a busy week, also recently announcing the $199 Neo drone, a tiny and lightweight hands-free drone that is a clear response to last year’s HoverAir X1 and the upcoming HoverAir X1 Pro and Pro Max. With drone video becoming more mainstream, it’s clear that DJI is catering to both ends of the drone spectrum with these releases.

The DJI DL 75mm f/1.8 is available for purchase today for $1,299, and includes protective glass, counterbalancing blocks, and hardware to install onto the Inspire 3 drone.
