Doctor warns of vomiting bug symptoms as sickness spreads across UK

The UK is grappling with a sickness bug, and Brits could be missing the telltale early symptoms, unaware of how to manage them effectively at home.

As norovirus cases increase across the nation ahead of Christmas, creating a climate of worry, health experts have stepped up with vital advice.

The winter vomiting bug has sent cases soaring to more than double the usual figures for this time of year, and Dr Donald Grant, GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has sounded the alarm.

With diarrhoea and vomiting being the primary indicators of a norovirus infection, Dr Grant has alerted the public to the effects these symptoms can provoke, adding layers of complication and additional symptoms for those trying to recover.

Dr Grant said: “Common side effects include abdominal cramps due to a change in intestinal activity, urgent bowel movements and bloating.

“It can also drastically increase dehydration, meaning consuming (safe) water is a necessity in order to reduce the effects and improve health.”

He further highlights the risks associated with vomiting: “Vomiting can have similar effects on our body. Much like diarrhoea, throwing up can leave us dehydrated and with an electrolyte imbalance, meaning rehydration is key to feeling better quickly.

“While healthy people should recover in time, the illness can prove risky for those with poor immune systems. Therefore, I recommend seeking urgent medical attention should symptoms worsen.”

Dr Grant revealed his expert advice for tackling norovirus and general diarrhoea, recommending Imodium Instant Melts, Dioralyte Sachets, and FyboCalm Diarrhoea Relief Capsules to help sufferers.

These treatments target everything from easing diarrhoea and replenishing fluids to soothing side effects like abdominal pain, bloating, and wind.

Furthermore, Dr Grant stressed the significance of diet in recovery, saying: “I suggest avoiding fatty and highly seasoned foods and instead opting for light alternatives such as rice, toast or bananas. If your symptoms continue to worsen or fail to alleviate, it’s important to book a visit with your GP for further advice.”
