Dr. Amir Khan, a GP and regular on ITV’s Lorraine, This Morning, and Good Morning Britain, has shared insights on why people might be experiencing hair loss and how they can encourage regrowth. On Instagram, he mentioned that hair loss is a common concern among his patients.
Dr. Khan first rules out treatable causes, such as nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances. He then goes on to explore other potential factors.
He explains: “I will work with my patients to rule out any hormonal issues such as an underactive thyroid or menopausal symptoms, look at any deficiencies such as iron, make sure there are no autoimmune or skin conditions going on. Once I’ve ruled out any treatable causes, I also ask about what my patients are eating to help good hair growth and health.”
He stresses that there is “no one food that is going to fix your hair growth. However eating a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals may help promote hair growth.”
Stating that more research is needed, he shared the helpful tips, and this is what the GP wants you to know.
1. Eggs
Dr Khan says: “Eggs may help. They contain high levels of protein which is what hair is mainly made up of and something called biotin which is essential for the hair protein, keratin. Eggs also contain zinc and selenium which can support healthy hair growth.”
2. Berries
The GP says that fruit is also a great option. He explained: “Now you guys know I go on about the health benefits of berries all the time, and that is because they are ace and it’s no different for your hair.”
The reason for this being a top pick to help your hair is because of what it contains. He explains: “They contain vitamin C which is needed for collagen production which can strengthen hair and lots of antioxidants which can help protect hair from damage.”
3. Dark green leafy veg
Although this is something not everyone loves, it’s great for your health – and hair. The expert says that they are “another champion food group” adding: “They contain folic acid, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C, all of which can support healthy hair growth.”
4. Fish and nuts
“Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon and mackerel and plant versions found in walnuts and flax seeds can also support hair growth.” he says.
The health guru adds: “Nuts and seeds also contain vitamin E which is thought to be a hair-healthy antioxidant.”
