East Bay car dealership shooting was domestic violence

Witnesses told police that a woman who worked at the Toyota of Berkeley Service Center at 1025 Eastshore Highway was shot and killed by a man inside the service center at 11:14 a.m. Thursday, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday press release.

After law enforcement arrived on the scene, the man and officers from the Berkeley Police Department exchanged gunfire on the second floor of the business, the sheriff’s office said. Officials said the man died after the encounter with police.

The Berkeley Scanner, which was the first to report on the shooting, said witnesses told the outlet that the man was delivering coffee to a woman. Lt. Tya Modeste, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said during a Thursday afternoon press conference that officials are not able to confirm that the man was bringing the employee coffee.

The identities of the two deceased people have not been released by the sheriff’s office. 

The Albany Police Department is investigating the shooting as a homicide.
