Measures Taken After Scandal Erupts
This crackdown comes after videos first surfaced last week, sending shockwaves across the Central African nation, which has been under the leadership of President Teodoro Obiang for over four decades. As the scandal unfolded, reports indicated that numerous videos, reportedly discovered during a corruption investigation at the official’s home, involved multiple women, including wives and relatives of other prominent government figures.
Vice President Orders Increased Security and Surveillance
Vice President Nguema Obiang Mangue responded by announcing stricter policies to prevent such activities within government spaces. Measures include installing security cameras across all offices and tightening security checks. According to a government statement, these decisions were made to “prevent judiciary and ministry officials from engaging in illicit acts at work.”
Emergency Meetings Held; Suspensions and Reprimands Expected
The new policies were outlined after emergency discussions with the Supreme Court, the attorney general, and other officials. The government has declared that individuals appearing in the videos will face suspension, though it did not release specific names. Security personnel responsible for safeguarding these offices are also expected to receive disciplinary action for not preventing these incidents.
