The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced on Tuesday that music legend Erykah Badu will be honored with the Fashion Icon Award at the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards, taking place on October 28.
“Erykah Badu and fashion are synonymous in many ways… Erykah effortlessly exudes herself, her unique point of view, through the clothing she chooses to wear… and each look she dreams up is so individual and true to herself..,” said Thom Browne, the chairman of the CFDA.
Beyond music, Badu is recognized as a fashion force whose style inspires global trends. Since her debut 1997 album ‘Baduizm’, she has influenced pop culture with her fearless approach to fashion, from her iconic headwraps to her vibrant mix of colors, patterns, and vintage and contemporary pieces.
Throughout her career, Badu has embraced the work of several prominent American designers, including Rick Owens, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty, and Thom Browne.
“This honor is amazing, and I do not take it for granted. I’ve always had a love for taking bits and pieces of the things I am attracted to and creating something far more grand than the sum of those parts,” added Badu.
“From the music I make, to the looks I put on, to the technology I’m developing, I’m always looking for innovative, exciting ways to be more expressive and connect with people — to be closer to nature.”
As the Fashion Icon Award recipient, Badu joins past honorees including Zendaya, Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Donatella Versace, and more.
