An $18.6 million mega fleet of fire trucks has been unveiled to help protect Sydney – and 7NEWS has been given an exclusive first look.
It includes new specialist fire trucks with higher ladders, spanning up to 44 metres, to help rescue residents from CBD skyscrapers.
Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib said the state government is responding to the changing needs of our city.

“This is the first of its kind, so absolute game changing stuff, particularly for the changing nature of the city scape,” he said.
“We’ve got to be at the very forefront of any technological changes and we’ve got to make sure we do everything we can to help service the people of New South Wales”
Last year’s fire in Surry Hills highlighted the strengths and challenges of aerial firefighting using the existing fleet.
Dib says “fire crews did an incredible job”.
The fleet includes two new trucks which can stretch up 32 metres, expand out 22 metres and even stretch down a cliff three metres.
They’re state of the art with high-definition thermal imaging capability, feeding back real-time intelligence to Fire and Rescue command centres.
Fire and Rescue NSW Deputy Commissioner Megan Stiffler says “we use it to locate rescues, it can help us identify hotspots and we can actually see if our techniques are reducing the heat in the fire”.
More mega trucks with 44-metre-long ladders are due to be rolled out in the city’s and Kogarah’s fire stations next month.
An in-built Target Memory System enables the ladders to be automatically lowered or raised to set co-ordinates, saving time in rescue scenarios.
In total, 20 trucks rolled out this financial year – at Penrith, Smithfield, St Marys, Huntingwood, Mascot and Rosemeadow.
Brand-new fire stations have just opened at Oran Park and Busby.
