NEW DELHI: Google Maps now shows “Bharat” as “Country in South Asia”, along with a digital representation of the Indian flag. The map shows Bharat as a location even if one searches in Hindi or English.
The map users can now use “Bharat” or “India” to see the official Indian map. A user needs to type “Bharat” in the search box of Google Maps and give a space to see the country name with the flag, and upon clicking the results, the user will redirected to the official Indian map.
The Google Map showing “Bharat” as an official map comes weeks after the Indian government mentioned the President of Bharat instead of the President of India in the G20dinner invites. The central government has been using “Bharat” instead of “India” in its official communications since.
The issue even triggered a political war of words a month back when Congress slammed the centre for mentioning “Bharat” instead of “India” in G20 dinner invites.
“So the news is indeed true. Rashtrapati Bhawan has sent out an invite for a G20 dinner on September 9 in the name of ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the usual ‘President of India’,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh had said.
“Now, Article 1 in the Constitution can read: ‘Bharat, that was India, shall be a Union of States’. But now even this ‘Union of States’ is under assault,” he added.
Defending the government’s decision to use “Bharat” instead of “India” in official communication, Union minister of state for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar had said: “They have a problem with everything. I am a ‘Bharatwaasi’, the name of my country was ‘Bharat’ and will remain ‘Bharat’ always. If Congress has a problem with this, they should find a cure for it themselves”.
