F1 2023 Dutch GP: Verstappen’s dominance continues with Pole at home race, Norris on front row

After the long summer break, Formula One finally returns for the 14th round of the season i.e. the Dutch Grand Prix, being held at the 4.259 km long Circuit Zandvoort in North Holland. It’s reigning World Champion and current Championship leader Max Verstappen‘s home GP, with the Red Bull driver having emerged victorious during the last two consecutive outings at the circuit, and set to take Pole position yet again!

Here’s how the Qualifying session of the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix went down today, take a look –

Alex Albon went the fastest around Zandvoort in Qualifying 1, with the entire grid out on intermediate tyres.Verstappen took P2, while McLaren duo Piastri and Norris occupied the next two spots. Carlos Sainz sat on fifth. Zhou Guanyu, Esteban Ocon, Kevin Magnussen, Valterri Bottas and Liam Lawson were eliminated in the first qualifying.

With the track drying up a bit, Max Verstappen took the lead in Q2, posting a lap time of 1:18.856. Oscar Piastri went second fastest, ahead of Albon, Leclerc, and Russell in third, fourth and fifth respectively. Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda and Nico Hulkenberg did not make it to the final qualifying, and will be lining up from 11th to 15th in tomorrow’s race.

The third Qualifying was delayed after Logan Sargeant’s Williams went into the barriers with eight minutes left on the clock, resulting in red flags. The time taken to repair the barriers resulting in the track drying up even more, with the drivers now switching to Softs. The red flags were shown again after Charles Leclerc had a crash into the barriers.
In the end, it was Max Verstappen who secured the Pole position at his home Grand Prix after posting a lap time of 1:10.567, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris on second and Mercedes’ George Russell on third. Alex Albon finished a respectable fourth ahead of Fernando Alonso on P5. Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Oscar Piastri, Leclerc, and Sargeant will take P6 to P10 respectively.
