F1 2023: Norris, Piastri ‘confident’ of overtaking Ferrari for third in constructors’ race

McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have expressed hope of not only overtaking Aston Martin for fourth in the constructors’ championship over the final five rounds of the 2023 season, but also putting pressure on third-placed Ferrari which is 79 points ahead of McLaren. The last eight race weekends saw McLaren go from being over 100 points behind Aston Martin to just 11 behind the latter on fifth.

Asked if third place behind Red Bull and Mercedes is now a realistic target, Norris said: “It’s doable, I think so.

A couple of races ago it was 70-something [points] to Aston. I think we’re definitely not overconfident. We’re confident, I think we need to be, but we know there’s still going to be some races where we’re not going to be quite as strong.”
Meanwhile teammate Piastri agreed with his teammate as he also highlighted the remaining two Sprint races of the season, where even more points will be up for grabs. “I think 79 points in what, five races and a couple of Sprints? It’s a big challenge, but yeah, we’ll give it a go. I think obviously the gap to Aston now is very achievable, but yeah, hopefully we can do it.”

McLaren had a challenging start to the 2023 season after failing to score a point at the first two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, sitting at the bottom of the standings. However, mid-season upgrades have turned the team’s fortunes around, even helping rookie Oscar Piastri secure his first win in Formula 1 at the Qatar GP Sprint.
