TUSCAN CHEERS: Ferruccio Ferragamo and his family’s Il Borro Toscana is further expanding through the acquisition of a Tuscan winemaking estate called Pinino.
Based in the renowned Montalcino area, Pinino comprises 21 hectares of land, of which 16.24 hectares are vineyards, and produces Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino and S. Antimo Sangiovese.
Pinino’s yearly production of Brunello di Montalcino amounts to around 80,000 bottles.
Il Borro Toscana has been owned by the Ferragamo family since 1993 and is managed by chairman Ferruccio and his children, Salvatore and Vittoria.
The estate, based in the Valdarno Superiore area of Tuscany on a surface of 1,100 hectares of biological farming, closed 2023 with sales surpassing 22 million euros, up 18 percent on 2022. Last year, Borro Wines saw a surge in sales in Asia and Europe, up 54 and 53 percent, respectively.
Terroir Pinino
Ferruccio Ferragamo enthused about the acquisition, which “further elevates our qualifications in terms of excellence. With Borro Wines we are committed to a project that aims to guarantee an offer of products and labels that is increasingly wider and of quality.”
Financial details of the deal were not revealed.
The Ferragamos expanded the winemaking from a small original vineyard to cover 222 acres and have been producing wines linked to the territory, from the drier sangiovese up higher on the hills to cabernet and syrah on the land close to the Arno river, and merlot at the bottom of the valley, where the ground is clay-ey. The first harvest dates back to 1999, and the first 6,700 bottles of Il Borro Toscana were presented at wine trade show Vinitaly in 2001.
The wines from Pinino will be available at all of the Borro restaurants, which also include Bistro units in cities such as Florence, Dubai and London.
Il Borro Toscana also produces oil, vegetables, honey, eggs and pecorino cheese.
Il Borro is part of the Relais & Châteaux association and comprises a restored medieval hamlet from the 11th century with 38 suites, three villas and 20 suites of Le Aie del Borro.
