More than 20 Fire and Rescue NSW trucks and 100 firefighters responded to the blaze which is said to have started in a neighbouring car wrecking unit, producing thick black smoke that could be seen for kilometres.

The blaze was contained within an hour and a NSW Ambulance spokesperson confirmed no one was injured with all workers accounted for.

“Fires at wrecking yards can burn extremely hot and fast,” Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.

“The extreme heat and potential to spread rapidly can make these types of fires difficult to contain.”

Footage of the fire showed mass amounts of smoke billowing from the structure while planes continued to fly past.

“That looks bad, I hope everybody got out,” a witness can be heard saying in a video obtained by 7NEWS.

“All that water he just put on there doesn’t look like it did anything.”

Milperra Rd and Fitzpatrick St were closed due to the blaze, according to NSW Police.

People in the area are urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed due to the smoke.
