The men’s boat is seen in footage flipping over as it attempts to navigate a dangerous swell off Duranbah Beach.

Three members of the public on a jet ski assisted the rescue operation, pulling a 58-year-old man from the ocean, before a marine rescue boat arrived. He was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital as a precaution.

The other man, aged 56, was winched from the ocean by the chopper rescue crew and taken to Duranbah Beach.

He could not be revived and has yet to be identified.

Police said initial inquiries revealed neither man was wearing a life jacket, however their investigations are continuing.

“Combined rescue effort by all the agencies that attended, and they did a wonderful job in difficult circumstances,” Detective Sergeant Donna Tutt said.

Tutt added it was “very important” for the community to wear life jackets when going out to sea.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
