Francesco Bagnaia: Bagnaia triumphs at Austrian MotoGP, Marquez completes first race of the year

Reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia dominated at the Austrian MotoGP on Sunday, extending his lead in the championship standings. The Italian, starting from pole position, dominated the race to the chequered flag, guiding his Ducati home 5.191s ahead of Brad Binder’s fast-launching KTM. Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium for VR46 Racing.
As the lights went out at Spielberg, despite Binder’s efforts like in Saturday’s sprint, Bagnia took the lead from the South African as the duo pulled away from the chasing pack.
By the end of the first lap, Bagnaia and Binder had already established a firm lead of under a second, while KTM’s Jack Miller started losing time and positions. In the meantime, another disaster for Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales saw him drop to P10.
The most crucial part of the race unfolded between laps 17 and 22 as Bagnaia widened his lead to over four seconds.

After a battle with Alex Marquez of Gresini, Bezzecchi made a successful move on Gresini’s Alex Marquez on lap 22 at Turn 9, securing third place while his teammate Luca Marini secured fourth place by overtaking the Spaniard later in the race.
Despite a late push from Vinales, Marquez held onto fifth place after a slow start. Vinales had to recover from 11th position after the initial turns, eventually finishing sixth.
Jorge Martin, who served a long lap penalty for causing a multi-rider collision during Saturday’s sprint, crossed the finish line at seventh, ahead of Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo as Aliex Espargaro and Enea Bastianini rounded off the top 10.
Franco Morbidelli secured 11th place on the sister factory Yamaha. On the other hand, Marc Marquez, who hadn’t finished a Sunday race even a single time this season and in 301 days, finally took the chequered flag at the Red Bull Racing ring.
Johann Zarco struggled to 13th on his Pramac Ducati, with Tech3 rookie Augusto Fernandez and Miller behind him.
With his third Sprint/GP double and fifth GP victory this season, Bagnaia now sits comfortably at the top of the riders’ standings, 62 points ahead of Jorge Martin as Bezzecchi follows in at third.
