Last night, Barbie actor Hari Nef went old school in more ways than one for the Golden Globes red carpet. First was her gown, Alexandre Vauthier couture inspired by the intense glamour of the ‘80s club scene. Then there was her hair, done by Bumble and bumble stylist Evanie Frausto, which went a bit further back in time—to Brigitte Bardot.
“I was thinking about film, glamour, and femininity,” Nef says of her beauty inspiration for the evening. “Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve are just a couple of screen icons of mine who embody this idea of an actress with a capital A. I wanted to look timeless, just ‘done’ enough, and with Evanie in my corner I knew we could really feature hair.”

Hot off the plastic heels of a hot-pink summer, Nef still has Barbie top of mind while getting dolled up. “During the press tour, I resisted certain expectations for how someone should dress on a Barbie press tour. For the Globes, I wanted to do the opposite: big hair, cinched waist, ruffles. Mr. Pearl, who made my corset, designed it specifically to give me the shape of an actual Barbie doll…though I did tie it on a looser setting last night!”
It’s just the beginning of awards season, so there’s more to come from Nef. “Barbie reified and redefined femininity for everyone this summer,” she says. “I can sense a lot of optimism and I’m excited to see how Hollywood celebrates such a strong year in film.”
