Hazardous leak at ice supplier business in Fremont

A hazmat event at a Fremont business has caused a shelter-in-place order Friday. 

Fremont officials are advising the public to shelter in place until 1 p.m. in the area north of South Grimmer Boulevard, east of Grimmer Boulevard, south of Auto Mall Parkway and west of Fremont Boulevard, the Fremont Police Department said on social media. 

Crews are investigating a hazardous materials leak at Arctic Glacier, a business located at 43960 Fremont Boulevard, Aisha Knowles, a spokesperson for the Fremont Fire Department, told SFGATE. The department issued an alert regarding the hazardous leak around 11:45 a.m, the Mercury News reported. The specific material that leaked is unclear.

The building was evacuated after the hazardous material was reported and there were no injuries, Knowles said.

The area is near one of the city’s biggest shopping hubs, Pacific Commons Shopping Center, located just off South Grimmer Boulevard and Auto Mall Parkway.

Hazmat crews are currently on the scene, according to live aerial footage from NBC Bay Area. Officials hope to resolve the issue within the next hour, Knowles said at 12:45 p.m.

City officials have not released further information about the hazardous event.
