Housing development is eyed on about 50 acres of empty San Jose land

SAN JOSE — A housing development that would produce well over 100 units, some of them affordable, is being eyed on approximately 50 acres of empty land near a San Jose school.

The project is being eyed on land near the corner of Almaden Expressway where the road ends at Harry Street in south San Jose.

If built, the development would produce 177 residences at 20202 Harry Road, according to the proposal on file with the Santa Clara County Planning Department.

A trust headed up by Bay Area resident Gail Gavello owns the site, according to documents on file with the Santa Clara County Assessor’s Office. Chicago-based Northern Trust Co. is listed as a trustee for the property owner.

The value of the property, which consists of three parcels, was roughly $3 million as of January 2024, records on file with the Assessor’s Office show.

The property is located in an unincorporated section of county land that borders San Jose.

The applicant for the project is attempting to use provisions of SB 330 to streamline the review process for the development, according to documents on file with the Santa Clara County Planning Department.

“The project provides 20% low-income units,” Genna Yarkin, an attorney with law firm Holland Knight, wrote in a letter to county planners.

Of the 177 housing units, 141 would be market-rate residences, while 36 units would be low-income residences.

“Proposed uses include single-family detached and duet residential,” the project proposal stated. It wasn’t immediately clear whether some or all of the housing would be for-sale units.

An unspecified amount of acreage would be set aside for open spaces.

Latala Group, real estate firm affiliated with Latala Homes, is listed as the principal developer of the proposed development.

A time frame for construction wasn’t immediately available.
