The SDF has replaced Syrian government forces and is now challenging the rebel forces. The conflict between the SDF and HTS rebels is centered around control of the Ala Tayyam oil fields, where 5,000 barrels of crude oil are extracted daily.
The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels now have a majority of control in the Syrian region and they are trying to capture those regions where Asad did not have control ever. The rebels claimed that they have wrested control of the eastern city of Deir Ezzor after a fierce battle with Syrian Kurds backed by the US forces.
The eastern city was important not only for the HTS rebels but also for Syrian Kurds and the United States as the region is the biggest source of crude oil.
Hassan Abdul Ghani, a senior commander of HTS , said the rebels have taken control of the city. In a released video, a member of HTS said that rebels will soon take over the neighbourhood areas and a strategic town Boukamal has already been fallen to rebel forces.
The HTS fighters said that they will move toward Raqqa and Hasakah and other areas in eastern Syria.
On the other hand, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had taken control of the city for only a few days. The SDF said that it deployed to Deir Ezzor and west of the Euphrates River.
