Huge Oakland lumber yard blaze smolders as firefighters probe cause

OAKLAND — Firefighters stood watch on Monday over the smoldering remains of a long-time lumber yard in Oakland that was scorched by a four-alarm fire this weekend, as an investigation into the blaze begins.

The fire consumed Economy Lumber at 750 High Street in Oakland.

The Oakland Fire Department said the blaze was first reported around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. By 11 p.m., the same night, firefighters had contained the fire, Oakland fire spokesperson Michael Hunt said.

“Crews are still on scene at Economy Lumber,” Hunt said Monday. “We’ll probably be on scene most of the day.”

The wrecked complex is the site of one of four lumber yards that Economy Lumber operates in the Bay Area.

Oakland fire investigators were attempting to determine the cause of the fire.

The Oakland Fire Department also began working with the property owner and a heavy equipment operator to pull apart the building so crews could reach any remaining hot spots, Hunt said.

About 75 firefighters responded to the site of the fire Sunday. No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.

Economy Lumber has been in business since 1935. The company was born as a small lumber business and eventually expanded to four Bay Area locations. It wasn’t immediately known when 750 High Street lumber yard began operating.
