PITTSBURG — A driver died early Monday after losing control of a car on an East Bay highway and slamming into a wall and center divide, the California Highway Patrol said.
The fatal crash happened about 3 a.m. on eastbound state Highway 4 near the Railroad Avenue exit, according to a statement from CHP spokesperson Officer Adam Lane.
Authorities did not immediately identify the driver.
The wreck was the 12th fatal crash of the year on Contra Costa County’s deadliest highway. According to Lane, the total accounts for 43% of the fatal investigations the CHP’s Contra Costa division has conducted this year.
Overall, 14 people have died in the Highway 4 wrecks.
Lane said the driver was steering a burgundy Honda Accord when the car suddenly went over the right-hand shoulder and hit the concrete wall. From there, the car veered back across five lanes of the highway and hit the concrete center divide.
The Honda came to rest in the middle of traffic lanes, but no other car hit it, Lane said. The driver died at the scene. It was not known immediately whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
All lanes of eastbound Highway 4 were closed after the wreck, and the CHP diverted traffic off at the Bailey Road exit. The lanes were re-opened about 6 a.m., Lane said.
The CHP asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash or gone by it to contact them at [email protected] and 925-646-4980.
