I-680 south to be close over weekend for repairs

Commuters heading to the South Bay for St. Patrick’s Day weekend fun will have to find a way to get there without using a stretch of Interstate 680.

Caltrans will shut down southbound I-680 from the Interstate 580/I-680 interchange to state Highway 84 beginning at 9 p.m. Friday. The closure will last until 4 a.m. Monday.

The closure comes amid more than two dozen Bay Area celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day, including one in downtown Pleasanton that often draws big crowds.

Workers will be repairing a portion of the roadway that’s deteriorating, the agency said. New pavement will be put down to repair the eroding areas.

The closure originally was scheduled last month, but a heavy winter storm that dumped rain postponed the project.

Caltrans said the work over the weekend, as well as work done on two previous weekends is helping workers avoid approximately 40 night-time closures.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and give themselves extra time to travel long distances. From Danville and San Ramon, drivers should take I-580 west to state Highway 238 before heading south on I-880.

Those driving from Stockton and Tracy should go west on I-580 to southbound Highway 84 and rejoin southbound I-680 at Calaveras Road.
