Authorities on Tuesday identified two women and a man killed in three fatal crashes over a five-day span on Contra Costa County’s deadliest highway last week.
The three deadly crashes happened in Crockett, Discovery Bay and Pittsburg along state Highway 4 and brings to 17 the number of people who have died on the highway this year. There have been 14 fatal crashes.
The totals since Jan. 1, 2021, are 51 dead in 42 fatal wrecks, an average of about one deadly crash every three weeks.
The California Highway Patrol is still searching for the driver who did not stop following a collision about 11:40 p.m. Friday near Newport Drive in Discovery Bay. That wreck killed 87-year-old pedestrian Beverly Sweeney, of Discovery Bay. She died at the scene.
The CHP has not released any public information on the vehicle that hit Sweeney, and asked anyone with information to contact their office at [email protected] or 925-646-4980.
About 16 hours after Sweeney’s death, the driver of a gray Dodge Charger going west lost control near the Mc Ewen Road exit in Crockett and overturned. The crash ejected 31-year-old Kevin Parilla, of Concord, who died at the scene.
On Nov 13, the driver of a burgundy Honda Accord went off the right-hand shoulder while going east in Pittsburg and slammed into concrete wall and center median at the Railroad Avenue exit. Authorities identified her as Nancy Avila Cervantes, 28, of Antioch.
The CHP is still awaiting toxicology reports to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in that crash.
