The IAF aimed to establish its first Tejas Mk1A in Bikaner by July 2024, but delays in engine supplies for the Tejas Mk1A have slowed the production timeline of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has made a decision regarding MiG 21 Bison. The IAF will extend the service life of MiG 21 Bison fighters due to delay in the induction of indigenous Tejas Mk1A fighter jets.
It has been decided that MiG 21 Bison will continue its operations to fill the gap until Tejas Mk1A fighter jets are not inducted in IAF. MiG 21 Bison fighters are scheduled to retire by December 2025.
The IAF aimed to establish its first Tejas Mk1A in Bikaner by July 2024, but delays in engine supplies for the Tejas Mk1A have slowed the production timeline of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Under the given situation, the IAF was left with no option but to extend the services of MiG 21 Bison.
There is a lot of anticipation for the Tejas Mk1A, as it will feature an upgraded version of its predecessors, including advanced radar systems, improved electronic warfare capabilities, and a larger weapons payload.
The delay in the Tejas Mk1A has not only slowed production but also acted as a setback to the IAF’s modernization plans.
On the other hand, HAL is working to resolve the delay issue so that production can be increased.
