Indians Dominating In USA, Reveals Report; S Jaishankar Compares Nehru-Modi Times For NRIs

S Jaishankar cited the data & showed how Indian migrants numbers increased during the time of PM Modi as compared to the former PM Nehru, Indira Gandhi & Rajiv Gandhi.

Research by Boston Consulting Group Revealed how Indians have a major impact in the U.S. across Economy & culture. Indians are the second largest migrant group in the United States, with a young & highly educated population. The  ‘Indiaspora BCG Impact Report’ evaluated the impact of Indian immigrants and Americans of Indian heritage on American life. The report did an in depth analysis of the Indians’ impact across economic, cultural, scientific, civic, social and philanthropic areas in the USA. 

The event was the launch of the ‘Indiaspora BCG Impact Report’ in New Delhi. The panel discussion largely centred around the Indian diaspora in the US and the role the play or can play in consonance with India’s growth story. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also participated in the discussion and highlighted how Indians migration has changed in the last many years in the USA.

The EAM was also asked about the idea of dual citizenship for the diaspora community in America.

“Something I read in a useful book on India-US relations…when Prime Minister Nehru first went to America, there were 3,000 Indians, when (Prime Minister) Indira Gandhi went, it was 30,000, and when (Prime Minister) Rajiv Gandhi went, it went into 300,000, and when Prime Minister Modi went it was 3.3 million,” he said.

How Indians Are Dominating Different Sectors Across USA

The number of Indians living in the U.S. has grown to 5 million in 2023, which is a 50% increase since 2010. The population includes the first generation and also those who claim Indian ancestry. 

Indians Impact On U.S. Economy:

  • 16 (approximately 3%) of Fortune 500 companies are led today by CEOs of Indian origin, which is around 5% ($ 978 billion) of total revenue.
  • Indian companies have invested more than $40 billion in the U.S. since 2008, which created more job opportunities.
  • Indian Americans pay 6% of all U.S. taxes.
  • 60% of the Hotels in USA owned By Indian Diaspora

Philanthropy Activities By Indians

There are Indian-American donations to U.S. universities totaling more than $3 billion, including 67 donations exceeding $1 million each to more than 40 universities.

Science & Innovation Contribution By Indians

Members of the diaspora represent more than 10% of NIH grants and U.S. patents, and hold significant positions in academia.

Education Sector: Impact By Indian-American In USA

  • Among Indian-Americans 77% hold a college degree compared to only 36% of Americans overall.
  • Around 23,000 full-time Indian professors at colleges and universities around the country have mentored students in recent years.
