New Delhi: With digitization and modernization, travel has become more accessible and efficient. Whether planning to fly to a neighboring country to present a paper or visiting a new place for a honeymoon, air travel offers unparalleled convenience and ease. But have you ever pondered over the fact that India’s first airport is located?
Established in 1928 in Mumbai, Juhu Aerodrome is the first airport in India. It is also known as the Vile Parle Aviation Club. The airport saw its first flight in 1932, which traveled from Karachi to Mumbai, with industrialist and aviation pioneer J.R.D. Tata.
“JRD Tata was 15 when he took a joyride in a plane in France, and decided he would become a pilot. In 1932, he pioneered the aviation industry in India, when he set off on the inaugural flight from Karachi to Bombay,” reads the official statement on the Tata Group website.
Situated in Mumbai’s upscale Juhu area, Juhu Aerodrome is no longer used for commercial flights. Today, it serves VIP movements and helicopter services. Historically, during World War II, Juhu Aerodrome played a crucial role as Mumbai’s primary airport, supporting military operations.
