Insta360 has unveiled the second incarnation of its Ace Pro model—the aptly named Ace Pro 2. When you’re trying to beat GoPro at their own game, you’d better have something special to bring to the table, and Insta360 has upped the ante considerably with its latest offering. Once again co-engineered with the Leica, the Ace Pro 2 features a new 1/1.3-inch 8K sensor and an ultra-wide-angle SUMMARIT lens equivalent to a 13mm f/2.6 lens on a full-frame camera—that’s a field of view of 157º. (The lens on the original Ace Pro had a 16mm-equivalent focal length.) According to Insta360, the revamped sensor offers up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range.
Insta360 also says the Ace Pro 2 features an industry-first dual AI chip—“the first action camera with a dedicated Pro Imaging Chip that handles image processing and noise reduction, while a separate 5nm AI Chip handles further image processing and overall camera performance.” This allows the camera to shoot not only 8K/30p video (up from the Ace Pro’s 8K/24p), but also 4K/60p “Active HDR” video and 4K/120p slow-motion video. The Ace Pro 2 also boasts improved PureVideo, a specialized shooting mode that uses a custom-trained AI neural network, that promises to greatly reduce noise and enhance details in real time for better-looking images, even in very low light scenarios. PureVideo and Active HDR are available at up to 4K/60p. While 4K recording is available in 4:3, 16:9, and 2.35:1 aspect ratios, 8K recording is limited to 16:9 and 2.35:1. The camera can also shoot JPEG and DNG RAW photos at up to 50MP.
The Ace Pro 2 is even more rugged than its predecessor, with waterproofing out of the box increased to 12 meters/40 feet (up from 10 meters/33 feet), while the optional Dive Case allows you to take the camera down to 60 meters/200 feet. Other improvements include a larger, higher-resolution, brighter flip touchscreen; a more-powerful battery (1,800mAh, up from 1,650mAh); and faster charging.
