‘It’ll be the first time seeing him’ – Olympic star Heather Watson reveals plans to watch Scottish footie hero boyfriend

HEATHER WATSON’s Olympics dream ended this afternoon after she crashed out of the tennis Women’s Doubles in the quarter-final with partner Katie Boulder.

But while one dream ended, another could be just beginning as her boyfriend prepares for a monumental European clash with his new team St Mirren tonight.

Watson, 32, recently went official with Scottish football cult hero Shaun Rooney after meeting the Saints right-back down south when the former St Johnstone man was playing for Fleetwood Town.

Rooney, 28, sealed his stunning return to the Scottish game in May when Stephen Robinson gave him the call and persuaded him to head back up north on a two-year deal.

And the Perth Double hero will be looking to make his first impact in Paisley when the Buddies take on Valur in the second leg of their Euriopa Conference League qualifier tonight.

The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw in Iceland so it’s all to play for in Paisley, with a sell-out crowd at the SMISA Stadium later tonight.

Watson was unable to make the trip from Paris to Scotland in time for tonight’s clash but she has revealed she will be watching the match from afar.

Speaking to the BBC after her quarter-final defeat, she said: “He just text me. He watched us and said we played great. Bless him.

“But yeah I love watching him play. If we didn’t get through in our doubles yesterday, I was going to go and watch his game tonight but obviously we got through so it’s a win-win situation.

“I love watching him play and I think he likes watching me play too.”

Watson and Boulder lost out to Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini on straight sets.

The pair will now unfortunately head home from Paris early.

But for Watson, it means she will get the chance to see her partner in Scotland for the first time since his move to Paisley.

She added: “I’m definitely going to try and watch it. Bare minimum I’ll be following the scores. I’ve got all the alerts on my phone.

“I’m going to see him tomorrow. It will be the first time seeing him since he’s moved up to St Mirren.”

Teammate Boulder then joked that she would be joining her tennis partner in Scotland if the result goes St Mirren’s way.

She said: “Yeah I am getting on a flight too. We’re going to celebrate a with the boys tonight, come on!”
