As part of the investment, the 1.67 million square foot facility has been equipped with the latest in sorting and packing technology, known as the Joey Pouch system.

The upgrade introduces a state-of-the-art computerized system that automates the induction, sorting, and packing of orders. Key features include advanced induction process technologies, a fully automated sorter that assembles orders efficiently, and a sophisticated packing system capable of printing invoices and shipping labels directly at the packing station.

For the employees at the Reno distribution center, the new system will reduce training times and increase operational flexibility, allowing staff to adapt more easily to various roles within the facility.

The move is part of a broader $1 billion self-funded reinvestment strategy aimed at modernizing its operations and enhancing customer experiences, announced last year.

“The Joey Pouch system deployed in our Reno Distribution Logistics Center showcases an updated technology and we’re proud to bring this state-of-the-art machinery to our facilities. We look forward to experiencing its impact for our customers, associates and company as we honor our commitment to making every day count for our customers,” said J.C. Penney CEO Marc Rosen.

“When we announced our $1 billion reinvestment strategy last year, this is exactly the type of upgrade we envisioned for our supply chain. This new system will provide J.C. Penney with the best-in-class equipment and technologies to better support our associates and serve our customers.”

The strategy is focused on several key areas including upgrading digital capabilities, enhancing in-store technology and infrastructure, and optimizing the supply chain. Since the strategy’s inception, J.C. Penney has also launched more than 100 store upgrades and revamped its Rewards and Credit program.
